Kuala Lumpur: Street art, Durians and Little India…

Watcha People. Glad you’re still with us 🙂

I hear it’s a wet and windy in the UK at the moment. No need for Mosquito repellant or Suntan lotion over there then Eh? Ah well, at least you can buy French sticks and fine cheeses at the supermarkets.image

It’s strange the things you miss when you’re away from home… For Emma it’s Stokie oatcakes, for me it’s French bread, and we both miss cheese dreadfully. I also miss gigs, and there’s not much in the way of punk concerts over here hencefar. Hopefully that might change when we reach Indonesia.

None the less, when Feng Yi took us to the Petronas Towers at Kuala Lumpur (KL), we briefly ventured into an Irish Themed Bar, but beat a hasty retreat when we saw the extortionate prices they were charging. Thereafter, we went downstairs to a posh supermarket, which sold everything that western supermarkets do. image

At the time we just bought a few beers and went back outside (to watch the water and music display we featured photographs of a couple of posts back), but we later elected to return to solely purchase some cheese, bread, and random missed western food items, like Baby Bel cheeses, and such like!

On route through Chinatown one afternoon, I was accosted by a young punk kid on the street, who had taken a shine to my UK SUBS T-shirt, and hoped to trade it for a T-shirt he had in his rucksack!

The punk, who it transpired was named Amirul, explained to me in broken English that it was his dream to attend the Rebellion punk festival in the UK one day, and as a consequence, I was suitably impressed with our encounter.

We were only a short walk from our guesthouse, so we stomped back up the street so I could retrieve a spare RAMONES T-shirt I had brought along with me, so as to offer him a trade. I also gave him a shot of vodka, so as to wet his whistle! He seemed pleased with the exchange;-

& thereafter, he gave me this excellent TOTAL CHAOS T-shirt;-

So big shout out to Amirul. If you read this and ever raise the cash to travel to England, get in touch with me, and I’ll take you up to Blackpool, to the Rebellion festival!! Incidentally, it was with some irony that I also observed a Malaysian punk rocker wearing an EXPLOITED T-shirt strutting past a mosque one day in KL. Who said punk was dead Eh?!!!

Next up Emma and I were off to the KL Tower, which reminded me of the Tower in Seattle, which I was taken to by my parents as a child. However, it cost 100 Ringett each to go up (that’s twenty pounds a head), so we elected to take in the views closer to ground level!!

Fortuitously, the Grocers Inn has a cool roof terrace, so we were able to get some good photographs of KL, for nothing! Here are few shots from the roof taken by Emma, to give you a flavour of where we were.

Thereafter, we were to pack our rucksacks and head to the airport. We had decided to fly to Borneo, via Air Asia, and check out what Malaysia was like on the other side of the ocean!!

Is a dosa no substitute for a stokie oatcake? Those veggie Indian eateries sound preferable to a tasteless nutrition-less supermarket baguette accompanied by (calf dead) cheese.

    Three chord outfits:
There’s nobody as good as the Ramones, never will be. I mean everybody’s just emulated us and now everybody just kinda takes our sound as their foundations.
    – Joey Ramone (from the definitive Ramones cover band: the Ramones).

    Nostalgia:
On being on tour with the other Sex Pistols again: “They don’t seem to relate to the world around them. They’re stuck in this 1976 vibe. It’s very peculiar. It was a bit like walking around with a museum attached to you. But then, I’m perverse enough to enjoy that.”
    – John Lydon

    Self deprecation:
I created Punk for this day and age. Do you see Britney walking around wearing ties and singing punk? Hell no. That’s what I do. I’m like a Sid Vicious for a new generation.
    – Avril Lavigne

A selection of classic quotes you have cited there Bill. I also recall you and I laughing when JOHN LYDON, after slagging off GLEN MATLOCK for years on end, stated that following the SEX PISTOLS reunion, he thought MATLOCK was OK, but couldn’t stand the other two band members. Ho Hum.
Emmas friend Nigel used to work at record fairs with MATLOCK, and says he’s a really nice bloke.
      None the less, I’ll always smile at the official statement from Glitterbest Management, as to the reasons for sacking MATLOCK from the SEX PISTOLS;
“GLEN MATLOCK HAS BEEN SACKED FROM THE SEX PISTOLS FOR LIKING THE BEATLES, AND WASHING HIS FEET TOO MUCH”
      Ho Hum Ba Dum… x
